Pia, the town
Pia covers 13.2 km², lies between 7 and 29 m above sea level and had 11,615 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Pia is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the Occitanie region. In historical and cultural terms, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Agly and the Llavanera.
A little history
On 5 June 2015, the municipal elections of 2014 were annulled by the Conseil d'État because the outgoing mayor had used the commune's municipal bulletin for his electoral propaganda, contrary to local belief which was based on suspicions of irregularities in the management of voting proxies. The outgoing mayor had taken legal action for defamation in response to leaflets distributed in all letterboxes spreading this suspicion ahead of the new elections. The court ruling had not been made public as of 28 January 2016.
