Paulhan (pronounced [poʎɑ̃] in theory, [pojɑ̃] by pre-war generations, but [polɑ̃] afterwards) is a French commune situated in the centre of the Hérault département in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Hérault and by various other small watercourses. Paulhan is a rural commune with 4,039 inhabitants in 2023, having experienced a sharp rise in population since 1962.
A little history
The first masters of Paulhan were the Benedictines of Saint-Thibéry, the viscounts of Béziers and Agde, the counts of Mauguio, and the Guilhem, lords of Montpellier from the 12th to the 13th century. The kings of Majorca then became masters of the village until the 14th century. The domain of Paulhan was subsequently sold. The family de Veyrac held it for four centuries.
