Outreau is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Outrelois. The commune is a member of the Communauté d'agglomération du Boulonnais.
A little history
On 24 March 1550 the traité d'Outreau was signed, also known as the paix d'Outreau, with the purpose of returning Boulogne to France by the English in exchange for 400,000 gold écus. At the beginning of the 18th century, Outreau was a large rural and maritime market town covered with manors and farms. In 1813, the cadastral survey shows a strong dispersal into hamlets, of which le Portel is the most substantial. The town experienced considerable military activity from the summer of 1803 to September 1805, during which approximately 10,000 soldiers of Napoléon's Grande Armée were garrisoned at Outreau in preparation for the invasion of England.
