Olonzac, in Occitan Lonzac, is a French commune situated in the south-west of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the Espène, the Ognon, the Tartiguier, the ruisseau de l'Aqueduc, the ruisseau du Pas de Fosse and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The protohistoric site of Mourrel Ferrat (Iron Age) is situated on the southern boundary of the commune. After the sacking and massacre of Béziers in 1209, the army of the Crusaders headed towards Carcassonne. Terrorised by the news that had spread rapidly, the villages opened their gates and the populations fled. The local lords submitted or refused to pay homage and in the latter case they were declared "faidits".
