Oignies (pronounced [waɲi]) is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Oigninois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération Hénin-Carvin.
A little history
The town of Oignies appears to have been inhabited from the early centuries of the Christian era. Its name at that time was Ongniacume. Bertrand d'Ongnies (Oignies), Colart d'Ongnies known as Estourdi and Dreux d'Ongnies fought and met their deaths at the battle of Azincourt in 1415. In 1481, Jean d'Ongnies, seigneur d'Ongnies, husband of Marie de Ghistelles (a great family of Belgium), held the noble fief of the seigneurie and Vierschaere de Merckeghem, dependent on the châtellenie de Bourbourg, but situated in the châtellenie de Cassel.
