Nozay is a commune in the West of France situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique in the région of Pays de la Loire. Until 1790, the date of the creation of the commune of Nozay, the parish was part of the province of Bretagne (the duché de Bretagne until 1532), more particularly of the Pays nantais, one of the traditional pays of Bretagne. In religious terms, the current parish forms part of the diocèse de Nantes (the circonscription of the archidiaconé de la Mée).
A little history
The occupation of the Nozay territory from Prehistory onwards is attested by the presence of the menhir de Couëbrac and by the discovery of several polished stone axes. During the period of the Roman Empire, the territory of Nozay formed part of the cité des Namnètes, whose chief town was Condevicnum (Nantes). The nearest locality attested from that period is found on the site of Blain (its ancient name is not known), where two notable roads passed through, one from Nantes to Vannes, chief town of the Vénètes, and one from Nantes to Rennes, chief town of the Riedones. During this period, between 6,000 and 9,000 tonnes of bronze were manufactured near the former mine of Abbaretz, which extracted cassiterite, and that of Nozay.
