Nissan-lez-Enserune covers 29.7 km², lies between 0 and 122 m above sea level and had 4,124 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Nissanais.

Nissan-lez-Enserune (pronounced [nisɑ̃ lez‿ɑ̃seʁyn], Nissa d'Ausseruna in Occitan) is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the ruisseau de la Bastide, the ruisseau de Montady and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, three Natura 2000 sites (the "basse plaine de l'Aude", the "collines d'Ensérune" and the "étang de Capestang") and seven natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.

A little history

Nissan-lez-Enserune developed progressively from the depopulation of the oppidum d'Ensérune, the principal place of habitation from the 6th century to the 1st century before our era, occupied first by indigenous populations (the Élisyques), then by Celts, and developing a trade of exchange with the Mediterranean world. After tentative attempts at Romanisation, from the 1st century of our era onwards, the site was abandoned and numerous villas were established in the surrounding plains. At the origin of the village there is in all likelihood one of these Roman villas whose owner may have borne a name such as "Anicius".
