Niort is a commune in the west of France, the prefecture of the département des Deux-Sèvres in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The town is the seat of the communauté d'agglomération du Niortais, bringing together forty communes and 121,642 inhabitants (2019). On 1 January 2020, it became the central commune of the aire d'attraction de Niort, which comprises 91 communes spread across the Deux-Sèvres, the Vendée (seven communes) and the Charente-Maritime (two communes) and which has a total of 178,156 inhabitants (2019).
A little history
Niort has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by various worked flints including a polished axe discovered at the place de la Brèche (collection des musées de Niort). Before the 1st century, Niort was in all likelihood no more than a village established in the bend of the Sèvre where the Bessac quarter now stands. Archaeological excavations carried out during the 1970s and 1980s demonstrate significant commercial activity for the period. These same works date a gradual abandonment of the settlement to the end of the 1st century.
