Saint-Maixent-l'École is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département des Deux-Sèvres in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its name refers to the military school present in the town, in various forms, since 1881. Its inhabitants are called les Saint-Maixentais and les Saint-Maixentaises.
A little history
The town developed around the monastery founded in 459 by the Oratorian monk Agapit, joined in 480 by Adjutor who then took the name Maixent. The town first bore the name of Saint-Saturnin and prospered in the 6th and 7th centuries. In September 1346, the comte de Derby failed in his assault to take the town during the Hundred Years War. In February 1469, through his letters patent, King Louis XI authorised the creation of fairs and markets at Saint-Maixent, following a request from the comte du Maine.
