Bressuire covers 180.6 km², lies between 98 and 236 m above sea level and had 19,970 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Bressuire (Brsuire or Brseùire in Poitevin) is a commune in the Centre-West of France, situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres, of which it is one of the two sub-prefectures (along with Parthenay), within the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are known as the Bressuirais and Bressuiraises. With 19,970 inhabitants (2023), it is the second most populous commune in Deux-Sèvres and the largest in the département by surface area.
A little history
Bressuire may have existed as far back as the Celtic era and Gallo-Roman times, however the current site of the town contains no archaeological remains from that period discovered to date. The earliest records attesting to the existence of the town date only from the 11th century, with the mention of the église Saint-Cyprien near the castrum berzoriacum. The medieval city (Castrum Berzoriacum) came under the viscountcy of Thouars and comprised, at least during the Middle Ages, three parishes, Notre-Dame, Saint-Jean and Saint-Nicolas.
