Parthenay is a French commune situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres, of which it is one of the two sub-prefectures along with Bressuire, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The inhabitants are called the Parthenaisiens.
A little history
The name Partenay appears at the beginning of the 11th century and at that time perhaps refers to the present-day village of Parthenay-le-Vieux. There is no trace of significant human occupation prior to the Middle Ages and it is probable that Parthenay came into being at the same time as its castle, shortly before 1012. The first dynasty of local lords is known as the "Parthenay L'archevêque", as it prided itself on having an ancestor who was archbishop of Bordeaux. These lords, vassals of the counts of Poitiers, became powerful barons in the 11th century, controlling the Gâtine through the founding of castles and churches and the control of market towns.
