Thouars covers 81.5 km², sits at 100 m above sea level and had 13,891 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Thouars is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département des Deux-Sèvres, in the région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Thouarsais. From 1 January 2019, having extended its boundaries to include Mauzé-Thouarsais, Missé and Sainte-Radegonde, the commune of Thouars legally acquired the status of a commune nouvelle.
A little history
The discovery of remains dating from the Neolithic period in the vicinity of the old town of Thouars, notably the tumulus de la Motte des Justices and numerous dolmens, suggests the presence of human settlements in the Pays thouarsais from that era. The strategic position, on a rocky spur in a bend of the Thouet, led the local historian Hugues Imbert to argue that a Gaulish oppidum and then a Roman camp were located at this spot. However, no recent discovery has come to support this theory and very few remains dating from ancient or prehistoric times have been found in the old town centre.
