Cerizay is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called the Cerizéens and Cerizéennes.
A little history
The origin of the name is thought to be Gallo-Roman. The town centre was, in the Middle Ages, situated at the foot of the feudal château. The last two towers of this château, as well as its former Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century, were demolished during the construction, in 1890, of the current church. The litre, or belt of coats of arms, in the choir of the chapel displayed the blazons of the lords of the 17th century, among them that of the maréchal Urbain de Maillé (1597-1650), marquis de Brézé, baron de Trèves and sgr. de Milly.
