Chauray is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France situated in the eastern suburbs of Niort, in the département of Deux-Sèvres, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Several companies are headquartered there (insurance) and numerous retail businesses are established in the commune.
A little history
Several prehistoric sites have been identified by archaeological prospectors. At la Chauvinière, a spur formed by the confluence of the Sèvre Niortaise and a dry valley was closed off by a ditch dug in the recent or final Neolithic period. This site was discovered through aerial surveys carried out by Maurice Marsac (1990 Inventaire archéologique par photographie aérienne des abords du Golfe des Pictons, tome 1). An archaeological survey carried out by Marie-Claude Bakkal-Lagarde revealed an entrance not visible in the photographs (1989, bulletin de l'Association pour le Développement de l'Archéologie sur Niort et les Environs, no 1).
