Montreuil-Juigné is a French commune situated in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the région of Pays de la Loire. The commune was created in 1973 from the merger of the former communes of Montreuil-Belfroy and Juigné-Béné. The commune was awarded three flowers in the 2007 rankings of the concours des villes et villages fleuris but subsequently dropped back down the rankings by losing one flower.
A little history
The industrial history of the area is marked by the establishment of a wire-drawing works, Tréfileries et laminoirs du Havre (TLH), at the barrage de Montreuil-Belfroy (in the early twentieth century), followed by that of the Pechiney factory, whose significant expansion during the 1950s and 1960s led to rapid urban development in the commune. The proximity of the city of Angers subsequently reinforced this phenomenon. Montreuil-Juigné was created in 1973 from the merger of Montreuil-Belfroy and Juigné-Béné, two communes with traditional agricultural and wine-growing vocations.
