Montreuil-Bellay, the town

Montreuil-Bellay covers 49 km², lies between 29 and 73 m above sea level and had 3,746 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Montreuil-Bellay is a French commune, situated on the river Thouet, in the département of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region.

A little history

A small monastic establishment, probably at the origin of the city's current name, is recorded as early as the 11th century near a ford on the Thouet (future lower town). The parish church of Saint-Pierre was built there shortly afterwards, close to the priory of Saint-Nicolas known as « Les Nobis », founded between 1097 and 1103. Around 1026, Foulques Nerra established a keep, on the heights, and a fief entrusted to his vassal Berlai (which through distortion would become Bellay), the beginnings of the future upper town. Son of Foulque le Réchin, Foulques V le Jeune became Count of Maine and Anjou in 1109.
