Montréal, the town
Montréal covers 55 km², lies between 117 and 443 m above sea level and had 2,136 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Montréal (Mont-reau in Occitan, [munrre'al]) is a French commune, situated in the north-west of the département of Aude in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Lauragais, the former «Pays de Cocagne», linked both to the cultivation of pastel and nicknamed the «grenier à blé du Languedoc». Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the ruisseau de Rebenty, the ruisseau de Rivals and various other small watercourses.
A little history
The town was the heart of the Cathar country when it was the fief of the lords of Laurac. At Montréal, Cathar councils were held and, in 1207, the dispute between Catholics and Cathars in which Diego d'Osma and saint Dominique took part. The expression "concile cathare" seems, however, inappropriate. It is better to speak of a "dispute publique" on the occasion of the Miracle de la Cédule.
