A little history
Traces of Mesolithic occupation in the form of an abundant collection of flint tools were discovered near the Marais Pipy and the Fond de Billy. A polished Neolithic axe was also found at that location and another near Courrières at the lieu-dit "les Dix-Neuf". In 1972, during construction work on the Rocade Minière (A21) near the chemin d'Harnes, traces of a settlement and cremation burials were discovered. In 2006, behind the collège Youri Gagarine, groundworks uncovered a cremation burial whose partial inventory was established and the reconstructed artefacts deposited at the town's small museum.
