Montendre, the town
Montendre covers 25.1 km², lies between 44 and 120 m above sea level and had 3,222 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Montendre is a commune in south-west France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Montendrais and the Montendraises. Organised around the remains of its medieval château, this small town in the south of Haute Saintonge, on the borders of Guyenne, is a commercial, administrative and tourist hub, known in particular for hosting the Free music festival since 2001.
A little history
Human occupation of the site is very ancient, as evidenced by the recent discovery of one or more dolmens on the foothills of the mount where the château would be built much later. One must however wait until the Gallo-Roman period for a first village to develop, the forerunner of Montendre, around a fortified camp established on a rise, the present-day hill of the château. Legend traces the foundation of this oppidum back to the Roman conquest of Aquitaine. An officer of Crassus, by the name of Andron, is said to have established a first camp in the region, hence the name of the town, Mons Andronis (Mont d'Andron).
