Montbron (pronounced [mɔ̃bʀɔ̃]) (Montberol in Occitan Limousin) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are the Montbronnais and the Montbronnaises.
A little history
These places were inhabited from Prehistory, as evidenced by the skull (held at the musée de l'Homme in Paris) as well as various human bones and human artefacts found in the grotte de Montgaudier (2 km away) and visible in the musée du vieux château de Montbron. At the grotte de Fontéchevade on the boundary of Orgedeuil, some remains from the La Tène III period were also found. A remnant of a Roman villa (pars urbana) was also found on the plateau between Lavaud and Courtillas. A fragment of mosaic is held at the musée archéologique d'Angoulême.
