Mirambeau, the town
Mirambeau covers 26.9 km², lies between 9 and 108 m above sea level and had 1,520 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mirambeau is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (région Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Its inhabitants are called the Mirambeaulais and the Mirambeaulaises. A small town established at the foot of a cuesta that formed a major defensive site over the centuries, this former stronghold, barony and then marquisate under the ancien régime, is now one of the key centres of the canton of Pons and an active commercial and artisanal hub.
A little history
The surroundings of Mirambeau retain traces of early settlement, dating back to at least the first Iron Age. The necropolis of Font-Tertaud at Saint-Martial-de-Mirambeau, the station des Cheminées at Saint-Sorlin-de-Conac, and the salt sites of Saint-Thomas-de-Conac and Saint-Bonnet-sur-Gironde all bear witness to this. The village of Petit-Niort grew during the Roman period, being situated on an important communication route (the road from Mediolanum Santonum to Blaye), and most likely close to a canal providing access to the Gironde.
