Millas covers 19.1 km², lies between 89 and 500 m above sea level and had 4,417 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Millas (pronounced [mijas], in Catalan, Millars, in Occitan, Milhars) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales in the region of Occitanie. Its inhabitants are called the Millassois. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne.
A little history
The territory of Millas has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The original village dates from the early Iron Age, as evidenced by archaeological traces of a cemetery of the Urnfield civilisation located in the western part of the commune. On 14 December 2017, a collision between a school coach and a TER railcar at an automatic level crossing situated on the route de Thuir resulted in six deaths and around twenty injuries among the secondary school pupils present in the coach.
