A little history
The history of the town of Mèze is rich. Very different from what it is today, the territory of the town is said to have been described by the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela as "surrounded by water on all sides" and only "connected to the land by a narrow causeway". The original name of Mèze, Mansa, meaning "a raised mound topped with smoke", is said to derive from this situation. Indeed, a large fire is thought to have served to illuminate the site (remains found near the chapelle des Pénitents).
