Meursac, the town

Meursac (pronounced [mœʁ.sak]) is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine région. Its inhabitants are called the Meursacais and the Meursacaises. A predominantly rural commune, at the heart of a cereal-growing and wine-producing region and close to the seaside resorts of the Côte de Beauté, Meursac is a commune belonging to the natural region of the Royannais.
A little history
Whilst it seems likely that the communal territory was populated as far back as Prehistory, the oldest traces of human occupation found to date do not allow us to go back beyond the Gallo-Roman period, an era that saw the founding of at least one villa, the property of a certain Murcius, from which the name Murciacum derives, meaning the estate of Murcius, which gave rise to Meursac, the embryo of the present-day village. The abbé Lacurie, an eminent archaeologist and local historian of the 19th century, dates to this period the remains of retaining walls found at the bois du Château, and more recently, sarcophagi were uncovered close to the lieu-dit les Bucheries.
