Meschers-sur-Gironde (pronounced [mɛ.ʃe.syʁ.ʒi.ʁɔ̃d]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are known as the Michelais and the Michelaises. The principal settlement and chief town of the canton of Saintonge Estuaire, this former small fishing village in the Royannais was transformed into a well-known seaside resort at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, at the time of the great fashion for sea bathing.
A little history
Human occupation of the commune's territory is attested from the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the remains of the dolmen de Beauregard. The Ligures settled on the presqu'île d'Arvert around 1800 BC, creating an important bronze-working centre at Meschers. The Celtic people of the Santons took possession of the region somewhat later, probably around 800 BC.
