Mérignies, the town
Mérignies covers 8.6 km², lies between 32 and 56 m above sea level and had 3,527 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Mérignies is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. The village retains a rural charm and a portion of its agricultural activity. Due to its proximity to Lille and major transport routes, it has become a well-to-do residential village whose population continues to grow.
A little history
The discovery of Roman roof tiles in the herringbone walls of the church appears to indicate human settlement during the Gallo-Roman period. No archaeological discovery provides evidence of human settlement before this period, even though the site, close to a watercourse and at the heart of fertile land, seems entirely suited to the needs of the earliest sedentary populations in our regions. The existence of the small village of Merennus is attested in 1164. The land and lordship of Mérignies were held from the châtelain de Lille.
