Mazères is a French commune, located in the Ariège department in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the pays de l'Aguanaguès or plaine d'Ariège, sometimes called basse Ariège, or piémont ariégeois. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Hers-Vif, the Raunier, the Estaut, the ruisseau du Cazeret, the ruisseau de Marrot, the ruisseau du Rival, the ruisseau du Tor and by various other small watercourses.
A little history
A Neolithic, Roman and Merovingian site, the bastide of Mazères was created in 1253 by the act of paréage between the counts of Foix and the abbots of the abbaye de Boulbonne, which was then located on this site and was completely destroyed by the Huguenots in 1567. According to the Histoire générale de Languedoc, mention is made of Hugues, bishop of Toulouse, who, by his will, gave to count Raymond 1er the place of Mazères in 960, which would be the oldest text concerning this locality. The château des comtes de Foix, completely destroyed, was the preferred residence of several counts, among them Gaston Fébus during his stays in the pays de Foix, and Gaston de Foix-Nemours, born in Mazères and killed at Ravenne in 1512.
