Maureillas-las-Illas [moʁɛjas laz‿ijas] is a French commune, situated in the comarque du Vallespir and in the south-east of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales in the région Occitanie. Its inhabitants are called les Maureillanais in French or Morellasesos in Catalan. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Vallespir, a former viscountcy (absorbed during the Middle Ages into the viscountcy de Castelnou), attached to France by the traité des Pyrénées (1659) and corresponding approximately to the valley of the Tech, from its source to Céret.
A little history
The first known lord of Maureillas is Raimond de Maurallar, cited in 1147, though it is likely that the seigneurie de Maureillas had existed since the 11th century. Under Jacques II de Majorque, it became the property of the brothers Arnau Ier and Simon de Llupia. Subsequently, Arnau II, son of Arnau Ier, made the error of remaining loyal to Jacques III de Majorque and was dispossessed of the seigneurie by Pierre IV d'Aragon. After the traité des Pyrénées of 1659, Maureillas became French.
