Maulévrier is a French commune situated in the département of Maine-et-Loire in the Pays de la Loire region. It lies to the south of the historic and natural region of the Mauges, on the border with Deux-Sèvres. Severely affected by the guerre de Vendée, Maulévrier has benefited since the 1970s from sustained demographic growth.
A little history
Only the presence of a standing menhir at the lieu-dit la Moinie bears witness to a prehistoric human presence. The Roman road from Portus Namnetum (Nantes) to Lemonum (Poitiers) crossed the north of the territory of the present-day commune. A church and a priory were established at an unknown date. A fortress was erected there by Foulque Nerra, comte d'Anjou, following the integration of the Mauges into the comté d'Anjou before 1027.
