Maubeuge is a French commune situated in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Maubeugeois. With 28,767 inhabitants at the 2023 census, Maubeuge is the 1st town by number of inhabitants in the Avesnois and the 11th in the department.
A little history
The first documented traces of the town date from around 256 AD, when the Franks entered the region via the valleys of the Sambre and the Meuse. They held their judicial sessions there annually, the Mahal, in a place called Boden, which eventually gave the seat of these assemblies the name Malboden (Mauvaise demeure). One hypothesis about the origin of the name Maubeuge comes moreover from the possible transformation of this term during the medieval era into Malbodium, when, around 661, sainte Aldegonde, the founder of the town, established a monastery there.
