Matha is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called les Mathaliens and les Mathaliennes.
A little history
The Visigoths settled in the region of Matha, as evidenced by the place name of Gourvillette, the « village des Goths ». They were driven out by the Franks at the beginning of the 6th century and Matha became a centre for the spread of Christianity. It was in 866 that a castle was built by Vulgrin Ier, comte d'Angoulême, to hold back the Vikings. His distant descendant, the comtesse d'Angoulême Isabelle Taillefer, having been Queen of England during her first marriage to Jean sans Terre, married Hugues X de Lusignan, comte de la Marche and comte d'Angoulême, in 1220, and drew him in 1242 into a revolt against the Capetian monarchy.
