Marsillargues (Marsilhargues in Occitan) is a French commune of just over 7,000 inhabitants, in 2023, which forms part of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Lunel. It is situated in the canton of Lunel, in the east of the département of Hérault in the région of Occitanie. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vidourle, the ruisseau de la Capoullière and by another watercourse.
A little history
Cultivated vines have been present on this land for 5,000 years according to pollen diagrams, with a notable increase around 300 years before our era. Originally, the village was probably a fishing village made up of huts situated close to the Vidourle. There is, moreover, a rue des Pêcheurs. From the Middle Ages, the village was under the authority of the famous abbaye de Psalmodie, whose name was probably derived from the endless psalmodies intoned by the monks. This abbey was also the owner of most of the surrounding land.
