A town of 5,217 inhabitants at the last census of 2023, known as the Marquisiens, Marquise is a secondary hub of the Boulonnais, seat of the communauté de communes de la Terre des Deux Caps, between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer.
A little history
Arnould Ier d'Ardres, (liste des seigneurs d'Ardres), married, in 1067, on the advice of Eustache II de Boulogne, Mathilde or Mahaut de Marquise, daughter of Geoffroi, seigneur de Marquise. She gave birth to several children and died in childbirth and was buried in the church of Ardres. The younger son of Arnould Ier, Geoffroi d'Ardres, took part in the expedition of Guillaume le Conquérant to England. He received from his brother Arnould II, seigneur d'Ardres, the land of Marquise, received from their mother, in exchange for his estates in England.
