A little history
Several excavation campaigns carried out at Marquette have demonstrated the long-standing presence of humans there, see the Archéologie section above. The name Marckete appears for the first time in 1143 in a papal bull by Pope Célestin II, which assigns the revenues of the altar to the abbatiale Saint-Pierre de Lille. On the territory of this commune, the inhabitants of Lille, led by the marquis de Roubaix, won a notable victory in 1340 against the English and the Flemish. Before the French Revolution, Marquette was the seat of a principal seigneury bearing the name of the village.
