Marly, also known by the unofficial name of Marly-lez-Valenciennes, is a French commune in the suburbs of Valenciennes, situated in the département of Nord in the région of Hauts-de-France.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, this locality belonged to the suburbs of Valenciennes, over which the latter had direct authority. On 26 May 1793 the combat de Marly took place to relieve Valenciennes, which was under siege. Marly was burned to the ground by Allied troops, and a great number of inhabitants were burned or buried under the ruins of their homes. In 1904, in order to produce on site the bricks for the église Saint-Michel de Valenciennes, the « briqueterie Chimot » was built in Marly.
