Marcoussis (pronounced [maʁkusi]) is a French commune situated 26 kilometres south-west of Paris in the département of Essonne in the Île-de-France region. A village built up around a priory and the château of wealthy advisers to the kings of France, which later passed to influential courtesans and then became a holiday retreat for Parisian bourgeois, Marcoussis was also organised around its sandstone quarries used for paving the capital and around market gardening, with strawberry and tomato production rapidly transported to the Halles de Paris by the Arpajonnais train.

A little history

Archaeological excavations carried out on the territory, notably during the construction of the LGV Atlantique, revealed a human presence as early as the third millennium BC, including flint scrapers and a fragment of a sandstone grain millstone found at the lieu-dit le Déluge. The development of a first village took place from the seventh century onwards, with the construction in the valley in 663 of a priory dependent on the abbaye Saint-Wandrille. In 854, a charter of Charles II le Chauve mentions a property at Marcoussis.
