Savigny-sur-Orge (pronounced [saviɲi syʁ ɔʁʒ]) is a French commune situated in the département de l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. A seigneurial and monastic estate from the Middle Ages, Savigny-sur-Orge developed around the château occupied by illustrious families from the arrival of the railway at the end of the 19th century. The division into plots of the hillsides and then the plateau, and the construction of large housing estates, multiplied the population of the commune by twenty in one century, making it in the 21st century the fourth largest town in the département.
A little history
Remains of worked flint, polished stones, bronze and ceramics confirm human presence from the Neolithic period through to the Celtic era. The Latin origin of the name appears to indicate the presence of a landowner during the Gallo-Roman period. Bronze coins discovered there attest to a concentration of human activity in the 3rd and 4th centuries. In the Middle Ages, monks from the abbaye Notre-Dame-des-Champs developed a moustier at the Prés-Saint-Martin.
