Massy covers 9.4 km², lies between 55 and 110 m above sea level and had 51,729 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Massy is a French commune situated in the département de l'Essonne in the région Île-de-France. It is the chef-lieu of the canton de Massy and the seat of the pastoral sector of Massy-Verrières. It is located in the eastern part of the Paris-Saclay technology cluster.
A little history
The original settlement of Massy was almost certainly established on a hill known as the Mont Gaudon, overlooking the valley of the Bièvre near the present-day town centre. In the year 300, during the era of Roman Gaul, a Roman legionary named Maccius received from the emperor Maximien Hercule the lands surrounding this Mont Gaudon in order to establish a villa rustica there. A property known as the château d'en haut or hôtel du Dauphin, which succeeded this first settlement on the Mont Gaudon, was purchased in 1802 by Nicolas Appert, who set up his canning factory there. This property was sold in 1816 and the land was divided into plots.
