Marans [maʁɑ̃] is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Marandais and the Marandaises. Marans has the distinction of being the most extensive commune in the département of Charente-Maritime.
A little history
From the 7th century, monks established in the gulf drained the territory by digging canals. After the barbarian invasions, a first castle is said to have been built in the 10th century. In the 11th century the town of Marans was grouped around the castle and the prieuré Saint-Étienne, dependent on the abbaye de Maillezais. The octagonal bell tower dates from the 14th century.
