The 5e arrondissement, one of the first five in the city created on 24 March 1852, is the historic heart of Lyon. It was at Fourvière that Munatius Plancus founded the Roman colony of Lugdunum in 43 BC. On the place Abbé-Larue stands the murus gallicus, the first evidence of Gaulish occupation of Lugdunum, alongside which the Roman rampart was built.
