The 6th arrondissement of Lyon is one of the nine arrondissements of Lyon, a French commune located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It was created on 17 July 1867, with the north-eastern part of the parc de la Tête d'or being attached to it on 17 December 1894. It is often described as the most upmarket and chic arrondissement of Lyon.
A little history
The 6th arrondissement is a former zone of alluvial floodplain of the Rhône. For 15,000 years the river has carried sand and pebbles, and these alluvial deposits have accumulated to form the islands of the brotaux and the lones. The landscape is ever-changing. Before 1730, the main course of the Rhône passed through the middle of what would become the parc de la Tête-d'Or. On the islands least exposed to submersion, farms were established, those of la Tête d'Or, de Bellecombe and de l'Emeraude. However, activity was not solely agricultural, as the people of Lyon would come to stroll and enjoy themselves in guinguettes that were more or less authorised.
