Lunel [ly.nɛl] (in Occitan Lunèl [ly.'nɛl]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Vidourle, the canal d'irrigation du Bas-Rhône Languedoc and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (le Vidourle), a protected area (the Costières de Nimes) and three natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
In 115 BC, the marshy plain of Lunel became Roman territory under the consulship of Quintus Fabius Maximus. It is difficult to date with precision the birth of Lunel. Around 68, under the emperor Vespasien, conqueror of the town, a group of Jews originating from Jéricho probably arrived (from Luna which, in Hebrew, is said to mean Nouvelle Jéricho).
