Lorris [lɔʁis] is a French commune situated in the natural region of the Gâtinais, in the département du Loiret in the région Centre-Val de Loire. Exposed to a modified oceanic climate, it is drained by the Poterie, the rigole de Courpalet, the Treille, the Limetin, the Saint-Laurent and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage comprising two Natura 2000 sites and four natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The town was a hunting meeting point for the Capetian kings in the 12th century. The sovereigns maintained a fairly small court there and notably signed the charte de Lorris and the paix de Lorris. The charte de Lorris was promulgated in 1134 by the king of France Louis VI le Gros (1108–1137). It granted Lorris "privilèges et franchises" known as coutumes, which made Lorris the first free commune in France.
