Loos-en-Gohelle (pronounced [lɔs ɑ̃ ɡɔɛl]) is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the région of Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are called the Loossois. It is a member of the communauté d'agglomération de Lens-Liévin.
A little history
Numerous monuments and cemeteries bear witness to the destruction during the bataille de Lens (Condé), taking place mainly at Loos, and during the First World War. The bataille de Loos, the British component of the Allied offensive known as the deuxième bataille de l'Artois, was one of the principal offensives conducted by the British on the Western Front in 1915, during the First World War. On 25 September 1915, a local resident, Émilienne Moreau-Évrard, aged 17, guided the Scots into combat and then organised a field ambulance which she helped to defend with weapons in hand. On 4 October 1915, Loos-en-Gohelle was retaken by the English.
