Lodève covers 23.2 km², lies between 117 and 700 m above sea level and had 7,251 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Lodévois.
Lodève is a French commune situated in the north of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Lergue, the Soulondres, the Laurounet, the ruisseau du Mas de Mérou and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Lodève was the capital of the Lutevani, a subdivision of the Volque, then became the Roman city of Luteva. The oppidum of Luteva constitutes one of the centres of settlement of Mediterranean Celtic culture. The city was elevated to the rank of a Latin colony. Like all the chief towns of Gaulish cities, it became the seat of a diocese with bishops succeeding one another from saint Flour in the 3rd century through to the Revolution.
