Lillers (pronounced [lilɛʁ]) is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are called the Lillerois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération de Béthune-Bruay, Artois-Lys Romane.
A little history
The history of Lillers begins around the year 700, with an Irish prince who is said to have made a pilgrimage to Rome in the company of his brother. Coming from Boulogne-sur-Mer and Thérouanne, saint Lugle and saint Luglien are said to have been murdered by brigands not far from Ferfay, in the valley of the Scyrendale. Buried by a servant, the two bodies are said to have been "miraculously" carried by the waters of a storm to Hurionville near the castle of the bishop of Thérouanne, who gave them a burial. Not far from there, in the forest, lay an island amid marshland.
