Leuc, the town
Leuc covers 11.3 km², lies between 124 and 341 m above sea level and had 819 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Leuc is a French commune located in the north-west of the département of Aude in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune forms part of the Carcassès, a pays centred on the town of Carcassonne, between the foothills of the Massif central and the foothills of the Pyrenees. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Lauquet, the ruisseau de Toron, the ruisseau de Cazals and by two other watercourses.
A little history
The "feudum de Leoco" is mentioned in 1110, and the "castrum" in 1215. In the Middle Ages, several lords from families of the province successively shared the territory of Leuc. In 1372, the seigneurie was purchased in the name of Nicolas de la Jugie from the distant heirs of Raymond de Saverdun, by proximity to the title of the customs of the vicomté de Paris and not by reference to written law. In the mid-fifteenth century, the seigneurie of Leuc passed to the Dax family, a very ancient family originally from Carcassonne which produced several consuls of the Cité in the Middle Ages and remained present in the Haute vallée de l'Aude, notably at Axat, until the early twentieth century.
