Lestrem covers 21.2 km², lies between 13 and 20 m above sea level and had 5,009 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Lestrem [letʁɛm] is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the région of Hauts-de-France. Its inhabitants are called the Lestremois. Historically situated in Flandre française, it is a member of the communauté de communes Flandre Lys.
A little history
On the site of the old Lestrem, there was a collegiate church suppressed in 1221. The abbaye Notre-Dame de Beaupré-sur-la-Lys was founded at La Gorgue in 1221 by the lords Robert and Daniel, avoués de Béthune. It took over from the collegiate church of Lestrem, suppressed with the authorisation of the Pope, and they converted it into a women's abbey. In 1346–1347, Lestrem was sacked and burned by the Flemish. In 1405, Lestrem was pillaged and burned by the English.
