Lespignan is a French commune situated in the south of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Aude and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, three Natura 2000 sites (the « basse plaine de l'Aude », the « cours inférieur de l'Aude » and the « collines du Narbonnais »), two protected areas (the « Basse plaine de l'Aude et Collines d'Enserune » and the « Basse plaine de l'Aude ») and eight natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Remains from the Gallo-Roman period can be observed in the immediate surroundings of the village. The archaeological site of the villa Vivios is poorly defined, in terms of its exact significance and function, water management (supply and discharge) in Antiquity, and its current state of conservation. Very numerous, they are visible at the lieux-dits la Cambrasse-Les Escaliers (Fig. 3) and Gouldeau (Fig. 4).
