Les Mathes (pronounced [lɛ.mat]) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called les Mathérons and les Mathérones. Located in the north-western part of the presqu'île d'Arvert and the Royannais, this commune, which has an essentially residential and tourist character, is one of the components of the western suburbs of Royan.
A little history
The village is mentioned for the first time in 1043, in a charter indicating that the église Saint-Cyr et Sainte-Julitte belonged to the abbaye de Vaux. At that time, the village was an island, situated in the former étang de Barbareu, which had itself succeeded the golfe d'Arvert, which still opened onto the ocean at the beginning of our era. The village was attached to the parish of Arvert in the middle of the 13th century, before becoming an independent parish in 1671.
